How do you talk to a young child after his brother or sister has died? As I looked into my little boy’s bewildered eyes, it was important to find the right words to tell him about what happened to his baby brother. Dealing with my family’s loss of our infant son, Jesse, over twenty years ago led to my career as a Psychotherapist and Bereavement Specialist.
“I Miss Matthew” is designed to be shared by the grieving child and a caring adult to facilitate communication between the two. Sharing the pages together can lead to verbalization of what is going on in a busy little mind, and allows the hurting child to express his or her feelings. The book also offers subtle suggestions on how to help the child through the loss, and displays some behaviors which are unique to children’s grief.
Who can use this book? Family members, counselors, educators, pediatricians and all those who find themselves dealing with children and loss. “I Miss Matthew” is softly and poignantly illustrated by my friend Susan Hanley, whose infant daughter, Kelly died of a heart defect. It is our hope that this book can help towards healing the hearts of the brothers and sisters left behind.
